Keeping Poultry and Bees

Poultry refers to all kinds of domestic birds

Domestic birds are also known as fowls

Poultry keeping is the rearing and management of domestic birds.

·       Guinea fowls

External features of a domestic bird

Functions of each part

Eye;

·       Used for sight

Wing;

·       Used for flying

Claws and spur;

·       Used for defence (fighting)

·       To scratch for food

Beak;

·       For picking food

·       For fighting

·       Used for turning eggs

·       Used for cleaning and arranging feathers (preening)

Comb and wattle;

·       Differentiate male from female birds

·       They cool the bird on hot days

Uses of feathers to birds

  • ·       They provide warmth,
  • ·       Used for flying,
  • ·       They cover the body
  • ·       They give the bird shape
  • ·      They attract mating (courtship)

NB: Cocks have brightly coloured feathers for courtship

 

 

Types of feathers

i)            Quill feathers

 


They are found on wings and tail

They are used for flight

 

 

ii)           Body / covert feathers

 


They cover most parts of the body

They give the bird colour for identification

 

iii)          Down feathers

 

 

They insulate the bird

 

iv)          Hair feathers

Also called filoplume

They keep the bird warm

 

Uses of feathers to people

·       For Traditional dance [Acholi],

·       Used to make mattress,

·       They are used for decoration
